“I took a gap year before starting university, so going back into education was definitely a challenge. University is a completely different learning experience to A-Levels. So having to adapt has proved quite challenging in some ways... especially as computing students aren’t known for being very sociable people!

“I have always been passionate about the subject that I am studying. My time at Leeds Beckett has been a great experience so far. I’ve consistently sought to make the most of my time here, and after Cognni BSc Computer Science Scholarship Annual Report | Page 3 a lot of hard work and keeping my eyes open for development opportunities, I was invited to be taken on a trip to Nepal to work with The British College this summer. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and something that I feel I will benefit from in so many ways.

“I think that when you’re studying a particular subject it is so important to learn more about the bigger picture of what the study involves. Learning more about the technology itself and the language of programming has been such a rewarding process. A dream of mine is to get into game development, and thanks to this scholarship I feel I am one step closer.

The Cognni BSc Computer Science Scholarship has given me so much confidence in my abilities as a young developer at the beginning of her journey in the industry. I’m coming to the end of my first year now and I’ve already acheived an average of 80% across my modules and I’m so happy! I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity.”

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

“I’m now in the second year of my course and I’ve loved building on concepts from last year and contuinuing to expand my knowledge.

“Some stand-out modules for me have been Web Applications and Software Systems Design. In Web Applications I got to build on previous web development knowledge and create a really nice product at the end, and in Software Systems Design I got valuable insight into test-driven development and its applications in real-world environments.

“I was able to use the Cognni BSc Computer Science Scholarship to further my studies in a lot of the modules this year. I learn best by applying what I’m learning in a hands-on environment, so this year I spent a lot of time using my web development skills learnt in university in projects outside of university. I acquired web hosting and managed to deploy my university website online, exporting all the databases and getting all the networking setup.

“This summer I’m starting planning for my final year project. This includes working on revising the React framework and looking into TensorFlow modals so I can have a head-start on the development of my final year project.

“Receiving this scholarship removed so many barriers to my learning experience and allowed me to properly envisage my future career in freelance web development.”
