The Cognni BSc (Hons) Computer Science Scholarship

The Cognni BSc (Hons) Computer Science Scholarship:

Another year of exellence

The Cognni BSc (Hons) Computer Science Scholarship has been awarded since 2021 and has supported one outstanding Leeds Beckett student each year since. Now in its third year, the scholarship goes from strength to strength as each scholar excels in their studies of computer science.

After successfully awarding a deserving student for 2023/2024, this year saw a 13% increase in the number of applications to the Cognni BSc (Hons) Computer Science Scholarship. With more and more students struggling to make ends meet, it has never been more important to ensure access to opportunities for disadvantaged students who deserve to have their potential recognised.

The following report will provide an update on your new scholar’s progress of their first year, in addition to updates on your previous scholarship recipients.

Leeds Beckett University is exceptionally grateful for the generous support from Cognni and hope their commitment to supporting our students will continue well into the future.

Meet your new scholar

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

“It was such an incredible feeling to have been awarded this scholarship. I was so pleased I put myself out there for this opportunity, and my Dad was so proud of me when I told him my application and interview had both been successful.

Uni is a big step up from college, so naturally, there was a bit of getting used to the workload in the beginning. I quickly overcame these particular challenges however and got into the swing of things after that. I now know how I need to work in order to be successful in my second year.

The first big purchase I made with the funds from the scholarship was to upgrade my desktop PC. I’m really into the physical build of PCs, so tried to reuse as many old parts as I could alongside upgrading core components. I’m really pleased with the outcome and it works really well.

The upgrades I’ve made have meant that I’ve been able to work really flexibly on my assignments as I now have the right processing power and software to be able to complete my coding assignments from my student accommodation. This reduces the stress of coming in at the weekends and on my days off and means I can save on commuting costs.

I plan to spend the summer having a bit of a break from my studies, but this doesn’t mean I’ll be stuck doing nothing. I plan on putting time aside to learn some new coding languages to give me a head start on my second year, in addition to getting a part-time job to support my non-computing interests!

I’m really so grateful to Cognni for selecting me for this scholarship, it’s given me so much motivation and confidence.”

Where are they now?

Updates from your previous years’ and graduated scholars

Olivia Emms

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

“I’ve really enjoyed the more complex topics that second year has had to offer. I really like new challenges and testing myself and seeing the progress that I can make.

I’m planning on a placement year next year, so I’ve been saving a lot of my scholarship money to go towards that. I haven’t managed to ascertain one just yet, but I’m going to keep trying over the summer.”

Brandon John-Baptiste

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

“I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be graduating with first class honours from my course this year. It’s been such an incredible journey from the get-go and I’m really grateful to Cognni for all the support that they’ve given me throughout my time at Leeds Beckett. I hope to see Gareth on the day so I can thank him for all the support he and Cognni have given me.”

Thank you!
